1 in 8 Women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime . . .
. . . and Safeco Insurance along with McKenna Insurance want to do something about it.
Why do thousands of people come down to Balboa Park, along with the Safeco Insurance Team, to walk/run this annual race? Well, Susan G. Komen answered it best:
“We Race Because…
- One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
- Because every minute, somewhere in the world, someone dies from breast cancer.
- And because, breast cancer knows no boundaries- be it age, gender, socio-economic status or geographic location.
- We continue to Race because at the current rate, 13 million breast cancer deaths around the world will occur in the next 25 years.’
My first run of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure was back in 2011. Now, in 2016, I had the opportunity again to return to the most beautiful 5k race in San Diego’s in Balboa Park. The weather was perfect this year and made for a nice run. A sea of pink could be seen crossing through the park, and even northbound on California State Route 163 (aka the Cabrillo Freeway).
Our Safeco Insurance team total for this year is $8,947
At the starting line, I overheard a father tell his two boys, “It’s about the journey, not just crossing the finish line.” Good advice! I recalled hearing his words during the race as I passed under the Cabrillo Bridge. I looked up for a moment, then re-focused on what was ahead, knowing that the final ascent of this race is always a challenge. My goal this year was to finish in 30 minutes, and I just made it (check out that timer) without a second to spare.
30 minutes – Zero Seconds – Mission Complete.
A bonus to these events is meeting some characters out there. For instance, a local named Lance gladly obliged my request to jump in the pic with me next to this monster truck outfitted just for this race. Lance was unable to run (injured his leg), but had a bright and enthusiastic personality and will be holding down the fort until we return. Thank you Lance!
